What are the MDGs?
The Millennium Development
Goals(MDGs)are the eight international development goals. These eight global goals were set by 189 countries in 2000 as a result of the Millennium Summit of the United Nations. The Philippines was one of those countries which signed that declaration.
The declaration by these countries include 8 goals with 21 targets. The target date of achievement of these goals and targets is in 2015. The eight goals (known as the MDGs) are as follows.
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower woman
4. Reduce Child mortality
5. Improve metermal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Global partnership for development
What are the specific targets per MDS goal?
1.) ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER
•Decrease poverty
•Achieve decent employment for women, men and young people
2. ACHIEVE UNIVESAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
•By 2015 all children can complete a full course of primary schooling.
3.PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN
•Eliminate gender inequality in primary and secondary education.
4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
•Reduce by two-thirds, the under five mortality rate.
5.IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH
•Reduce the death rate of mothers due to childbirth
•Achieve universal access to reproductive health
6.COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA, AND OTHER DISEASES
•Stop the spread of HIV/AIDS
•Universal acccess to HIV/AIDS treatment
•Reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases
7.ENSURE ENVIROMENT SUSTAINBILITY
•Reverse loss of enviromental resources
•Reduce bloodversity loss
•Access to safe drinking water and sanitation
8. DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNESHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
•Address the special needs of least developed countries
•Make available the benefits of new technologies, information and communication
